Featured speakers:
Dr. ANTON LAMBOJ
...was born 1956 and has been an aquarist since the age of ten. Around 1980, he began to take a special interest in the cichlids of West and Central Africa. This interests led, in 1988, to the beginning of his academic education at the University of Vienna. Works for Master degree and PhD were focussed on the systematics of West African cichlids, which still is the main work and aquaristic interest too.His scientific work combines morphological and anatomical methods as well as ethological studies and molecular methods.
As an aquarist, he is also interested in many other groups of fish (“every fish is of interest and beautiful”), with some more detailed interest in Anabantoids and Killies. Other hobbies done with passion are keeping orchids in a small greenhouse and gardening.
Currently, he also is president of the Austrian Association of Aquarium and Terrarium Clubs (ÖVVÖ).
Over the years, Anton Lamboj has made 14 field/collecting trips to Africa. Recently, he holds about 45 tanks to breed and to study his fish, he has authored more than 150 papers (both academic and hobbist) in seven languages, including three books and several contributions to various other books, and he gave more than 250 presentations in 11 countries (including the USA).
Ingo Seidel
...was born in 1967 in Delmenhorst in the Northern German federal state Niedersachsen. Since his earliest youth he was interested in everything that was scuttling, flying and swimming outside. With the age of ten years he received his first fish tank by his father, who has even been aquarist for years before.
At first his professional development took a totally different course. After leaving school he started a professional training as mathematical technical assistant at a big electronics company in Bremen and worked as software programmer in this company for years. In 2001 he made a profession out of his hobby and moved to the Berlin area for a new job. Since this time he works in Seefeld near Berlin as a scientific assistant at one of the biggest wholesalers of ornamental fishes in Germany.
Above all the fish fauna of the South American continent is one of Ingo´s major interests. Starting with keeping cichlids, killies and livebaerers he soon found out that catfishes are his real passion. From 1992 to 2006 Ingo Seidel has been the leader of the catfish section of the German study group AK-BSSW (association for barbs, tetras, loaches and catfishes). Over the years he has been able to keep and breed more than 30 species of Corydoras, innumerable loricariid and some other catfish species. On several trips to South America he had the chance to observe many of these fishes in their natural habitats. He always tried to document his observations by photography, so that his photo archive meanwhile consists of many thousand slides. Since nearly 20 years he is writing articles about the ecology, care and breeding of catfishes. In 2002 his first book was published. He wrote the Mergus Catfish Atlas Vol. 1 and 2 in co-operation with his friend Hans-Georg Evers. The first volume has been published meanwhile in english language, too. These two volumes of the Catfish Atlas (in Germany Wels Atlas) are the biggest monography about loricariid catfishes ever been published.
Rusty Wessel
...lives in Louisville Kentucky. He maintains over 90 tanks holding over 8000 gallons of freshwater dedicated to livebearers and cichlids. His fish room actually is a separate, beautiful, state of the art house constructed specifically for keeping fish. Rusty's specialty is Central American fish having gone on about 60 collecting trips over almost 25 years. He has traveled extensively in Central America as well as been to places in Africa and Cuba. Considered by many to be the ultimate collector, he has introduced many new species of fish to the aquarium hobby.
He even has a fish named after him, Theraps Wesseli. If it lives in the water, chances are that Rusty has either caught it or been bit or stung by it. He is also a prolific author and photographer. His writing and photos have appeared in all the well known magazines in the hobby as well as numerous other publications.
Besides collecting, Rusty is involved in the executive of his local fish club and travels throughout the States lecturing and judging at numerous shows and conventions such as the ACA (American Cichlid Association) convention.
MITCH CARL – Omaha, NB, USA
Mitch Carl was born and raised in the hotbed of Marine Biology: Omaha, Nebraska. After a brief stint in freshwater, he began his saltwater career at Animal Talk Pet Center in 1994. After quickly realizing that he had no customer skills whatsoever, he obtained his Biology degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Not because he wanted to go there, but because he could afford nothing else. With degree in hand, he marched immediately to the Henry Doorly Zoo and demanded/pleaded for a job. After being mocked mercilessly, he was offered a volunteer scuba/underwater custodian position. Soon after, one of the aquarists mysteriously disappeared and he was offered the job and began his zoo career in 1997. On his way to his current position as Supervisor of Aquatic Inverts, Mitch tore down and renovated 4 displays. He currently supervises three reef tanks that include a 26,000gal Sulawesi Beach tank, a 6000gal stony/sps tank and a 2000gal Symbiotic tank. Add it all up and the Omaha Zoo has the largest volume of water dedicated to corals in the nation (at least for a bit longer!). Mitch also started the Zoo's coral propagation program. This 1000gal system produces over 1000 frags each year, and supplies many zoos and aquariums with captive corals. Mitch's new project is in conjuction with the SECORE (SExual COral REproduction) project and has set up 4 more troughs and began the adventure of getting corals to have sex. He is also working with the endangered Elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata) and has raised almost 2000 colonies from collected larvae. Before becoming a father to three beautiful daughters, he and his wife dove reefs around the world (Bonaire, Grand Turk, Roatan, Catalina, Thailand, Fiji, and Sulawesi). Now he is poor and only dives when others pay for it.
RUDY KERN
It was in the early 1980’s when Rudy first became fascinated
with planted aquaria. Before long, this fascination
developed into a passion for planted aquariums. Discouraged
with the selection and availability of plants in Canada,
he set out on an excursion to West Germany. A
chance encounter, with a seasoned aquarist and aquarium
plant’s veteran, changed everything.
The next several years included numerous return trips to Germany, which just
fueled his passion. With the assistance of his new found friend in Germany,
Rudy began importing a wide variety of plants into Canada. He then spent his
efforts propagating and distributing new species to fellow aquarists.
Before long Rudy began to realize that the demand for
aquarium plants far outweighed what one ambitious
aquarist could supply. As a result, it was in the late
1980’s that Rudy and a partner created the wholesale
company, Aquatic Plants Unlimited. They began importing
Tropica plants from Denmark as well as others
from suppliers around the world. Initially, the retail
market reacted with reluctance to adopt plants of such
high quality and price which Tropica offered. Through
Aquatic Plants Unlimited initiatives and perseverance, this changed significantly.
Many retailers have climbed aboard, and have made the Tropica quality
an industry standard.
Rudy still operates Aquatic Plants Unlimited. Over the years it has become
diversified into many aquarium related products, including water gardening
plants. Rudy is a long standing member and past Editor of the Aquarium Club
of Edmonton. After years in the hobby and the business the passion remains!
